Gambia was a British colony that gained independence in 1965. Consequently, the entire population speaks English. It's among the westernmost coastal countries on the continent. The country depends largely on fishing, farming and tourism for revenue. There country is geographically very small but densely populated.


The United States of America was created by West Africans such as Gambians brought to New England in the 1700s and first half of the 1800s as slaves. There has been a long but very successful U.S. struggle for African-American rights ever since.
