The minimum you must know
Algeria is an Islamic country that does not currently seek greater integration with Europe and the United States but someday may. Europe and the United States have more to gain from improving relations than Algerians do. NATO tourists to Africa more usually visit bordering Morocco. So locals aren’t accustomed to northern and western customs and attitudes. But you don’t have to be Islamic to have a great time there. Locals welcome peaceful people. Visitors can enjoy themselves. The country is beautiful, diverse and culturally very exciting.
Many years ago, the United States was gifted a plot of land in the capital Algiers to use any way that the United States wished. Twenty seven of the most valuable acres in the city were used in the most unfriendly way possible - as a cemetery to remember American lives lost in the region. The concerning land use long ago by past U.S. presidents seems to have been forgotten about by current ones. This writer believes the U.S. should generously help Algeria by working with European partners to create a new centerpiece of their capital city such as a beautiful Statue of Liberty or amusement area similar to Tivoli . Alternatively, the land should be returned to the Algerian government to be used far more cheerfully. That could create heartfelt appreciation towards the current or any future U.S. administration.

The President of Algeria has given exceedingly peaceful speeches. However, Algeria does not feel they are receiving peace from abroad. The Foreign Minister claimed in September 2025 that the country has been repeatedly imposed upon by coup-plotting foreigners in bordering Mali. Algeria is also deeply concerned that foreign countries have lost interest in events Libya, and won’t leave as a result. Algeria seeks a withdrawal of foreign countries from there.
Algeria cooperates with Europe on energy, migration and counter terrorism. And the country maintains close relations with Russia and China as well. So it has successful diplomacy. But Algeria clearly did not seem pleased at the United Nations in 2025 with its relations with bordering states, or the foreign relations of them.
This writer believes the country obviously deserves complete independence from any foreign impositions, and improving relationships with countries throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Algerian society is similarly advanced as NATO states. But Algeria and NATO nations have advanced in different areas, and consequently could benefit from working together. Large cities there seem as modern European and American ones. Old parts of town are elegant, too. Century old Algerian interior designs and exterior architecture seem to have influenced older parts of towns in Central Europe. Both the coastline and interior terrain are very beautiful. The country does not seem to seek European tourism the way neighboring Morocco does, because they’re hoping for foreign militaries will depart from bordering countries. But Algeria is an amazing place to visit for people welcome there.
Algeria is an active member of the African Union (that includes all African countries, except for a handful of suspended ones.)
Algerians live in peace according to the Islamic faith. People there are phenomenal. There’s a great sense of humor and fun. This writer enjoyed visiting.
