The Portuguese Republic is a gorgeous coastal country bordering Spain that's near the southernmost point in the European continent, called the Iberian Peninsula. There's beautiful weather there much of the year. Portugal cities have a uniquely wonderful design consistency. All neighborhoods in some large cities have buildings tiled the same several ways, so that affluent and poor areas look essentially the same. And the tiles are beautiful.

Spain and Portugal were historically united except for the past two centuries, when monarchies and authoritarian regimes ruled Portugal until the mid 1970s. Several African countries and the Portuguese people gained their independence in a 1974 revolution that brought democracy to the country for the first time. Portugal was then an early European Union member and later part of the NATO security alliance today.
