The minimum you need to know

The Bulgarian Republic is a member of the European Union and consequently NATO military alliance that shares the Black Sea with Ukraine and Russia. But it does not border them. Bulgaria is far to the south and next to Greece, Romania and Serbia. A Turkish-Russo conflict in the 1800s that was won by Russia was resolved by creating a communist state. And the communist government relinquished control a century later in 1989, allowing Bulgaria to evolve into a democratically elected member of Europe over the past several decades. The country therefore shares history and culture with Russia even though it's geographically and diplomatically integrated with Europe.
