The minimum you must know

Romania claimed in March 2025 that Russia was plotting against their government. A 101 year old holocaust named Radu Theodoru was reportedly held.

This writer does not know if the Romanian government was merely being deterred too convincingly (but hopes that’s all that occurred). He understands that not a single Romanian government official was harmed or even affected by these events.

Romania was a socialist republic until 1989 when democracy took hold following a revolution. There have been democratic elections there ever since. However, a recent presidential election was successfully contested and annulled.

Romania became a member of the European Union around 2007 and therefore NATO. The country borders Ukraine, and shares the Black Sea with Ukraine and Russia. Therefore, Romania is strategically very important to the security competition between NATO and Russia that this writer hopes is currently being resolved.

Romania took in millions of refugees from Ukraine at the start of the Ukrainian and Russian incursions. Consequently, the country housed countless Russian and Ukrainian-speaking people, and transported many more to surrounding nations. Romania therefore has a substantial national interest in a quick resolution to the Ukrainian matter, to return settlers to their homeland, and encline European countries to maintain open borders to one another.

Previous administrations, such as that of President Klaus Werner lohannis, have been staunch proponents of peace. The current administration of Nicușor Dan won a repeat presidential election and entered office on May 26, 2025. The administration clearly seeks peace as well.

Romania has publicly traditionally been a very calming and peaceful influence on all alliance countries.

Romania is globally at peace except for the recent detention of a small number of foreign nationals.
