The minimum you must know
The Republic of Armenia is a non-coastal country near the southern border of Russia situated between Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan. The country has ancient Christian traditions and was under dual Ottoman and Russian rule in the 1800s. However, Armenia became a member of the Soviet Union from its 1920 formation until its 1991 end. But Christian Armenians have sought cooperation with Europe. Armenia became a member of the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe, the Council of Europe and the Assembly of European Regions, and several other European organizations, as a result.
Armenian modern history was not peaceful. The Ottoman empire caused a terrible Armenian genocide in the 1910s during the first global conflict, which cost between one and two million lives. Armenia also contributed a half million troops to the second global conflict, including two hundred thousand who perished. And there have been two territorial Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts with bordering Azerbaijan that were barely resolved in 2022. So peace has been very important to Armenians.
Fortunately a complete ceasefire and return to soviet era borders was agreed to at the White House on August 8, 2025 by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and President Donald J. Trump. A U.S.-administered corridor—named the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" was created (under Armenian law) as a commercial transit and infrastructure development zone for the region.
President Trump was nominated by the leaders there for a Nobel Peace Prize.
