According to media reports, Nicaragua appears to be moving toward a government system without meaningful elections. President Daniel Ortega declared that the opposition would no longer be allowed to gain power through elections, and the government has proposed constitutional changes including renewable seven-year presidential terms and broader authority to exclude opponents from politics. While some form of voting may still occur, it is likely to be tightly controlled rather than genuinely competitive.
U.S. Secretary of State Rubio responded in July 2026 by urging greater international diplomatic insistence on democratic elections.
