The minimum you must know

The Republic of Costa Rica has not had a military since the conclusion of the country's internal civil conflict in the mid 1800s. And the country has mostly enjoyed peace ever since. It's a densely populated coastal area between Panama and Nicaragua in Central America. Similarly to neighboring countries, Costa Rica was overwhelmed by immigration heading north, which has subsided over the past few years. But the county remains an appealing potential security partner to the United States because the continent is very narrow there, and consequently one of the easiest places to create implement border controls.
