The minimum you must know

The Republic of Cyprus is an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea near Israel, Lebanon and Syria that became a member of the European Union around twenty years ago. It's naturally very beautiful, and densely populated as a consequence of immigration. There are around 1.3 million people, including refugees from Syria and beyond who traveled there through Turkey. The country seems to support itself well with tourism and natural resources.

Media reports indicate that UK’s large military base called “Royal Air Force Akrotiri” was hit by a single drone on March 1, 2026. Cyprus activated a national plan called “ESTIA” in response. Only minor damage and zero casualties were reported. But the events suggests Europe is (frighteningly) defending itself far from the Persian Gulf following military events in Iran.

The population of Cyprus traditionally seem happy and peace-loving. Tourists ordinarily feel very safe enjoying the beaches and resorts there. But the recent air base incident is unsettling.

Turkey and Cyprus are aligned because they are both protected by NATO. Turkey defends Cyprus, and Cyprus defends Turkey. But this was an important development because Turkey used to occupy Cyprus by force for several decades ago, and still exerts influence over the northern third of the country. Many people speak both Greek and Turkish as a result. And the island has deterred the Turkish and United Kingdom before (starting as early as 1960).

Turkey and Israel have a publicly acrimonious relationship. It’s not clear whether that’s creating tension in Cyprus, where Israel is influential. The island has been surrounded by conflict in neighboring Israel, Lebanon and Syria, and probably has refugees from all of those places.

Cyprus has for the most part developed internally and externally peacefully. The President of Cyprus once patterned "peace" at the United Nations, and called for peace and respect for individual rights globally. He also invited the President of Turkey there for diplomacy, which this writer hopes and believes was successful.
