The minimum you must know

The Republic of Malta is a beautiful very densely populated island nation of around a half million people near Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. It's roughly equidistant from Europe and Africa, and is culturally similar to both.

Malta was militarily taken over by the United Kingdom during the second global conflict in the 1940s, and had to gain independence in 1964. But Malta and the Europe remained diplomatically very close afterwards, and was even able to join the European Union. Malta was also able to join the United Nations Security Council. The small country is consequently important to security globally.
