The minimum you must know

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a large peace-loving country with around twice the population of bordering Thailand and neighboring South Korea. The United States became fearful of socialist countries in the 1950s and 1960s, during the Cuban Missile criss on the U.S. border. A completely unnecessary conflict followed between the United States and far away Vietnam that was tragic for everyone involved, and led to the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon in the mid 1970s. Vietnam and the United States have had friendly and even improving relations ever since.

Currently the United States views itself as nearly aligned with Vietnam, and greatly appreciates Vietnamese leadership, even though the countries' foreign policies differ slightly. For instance, Vietnam has always vociferously supported a full and complete lifting of sanctions on Cuba. And a similar attitude only recently developed in the United States. Vietnam also maintains peaceful friendly relations throughout Asia without regard for whether or not countries are U.S. aligned.

Vietnam has a reputation for having a compassionate government and ethical population.
