New Zealand is one of the top ten largest island countries in the world residing near Australia and Antarctica. Some British colonies separated deterrently and even forcefully. But New Zealand peacefully and gradually became independent, while retaining pleasant friendly relations with the United Kingdom. There are around five million people there who are an ethnic mix of indigenous Māori with various Europeans who settled there in the 1800s, including the British, Scottish, Welsh and Irish. Around fifteen percent of the population lives abroad in Australia. Everyone speaks English as their first language.
