Jamaica was a possession of Spain from the 1600s until colonization by the United Kingdom in the mid 1800s. Jamaica gained independence from Europe in 1962. It's one of the largest islands in the Caribbean, and a popular tourist destination for Americans. Jamaica is geographically close to Cuba.
