The minimum you must know
The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe is a beautiful predominantly Christian island nation off the west coast of Central Africa in the Gulf of Guinea near to Gabon. It's similar sized to Seychelles, and the second smallest country in the continent. The islands were discovered in the mid 1400s by Portuguese explorers, and became part of the Atlantic slave trade. The country reportedly remains somewhat culturally similar to Portugal as a result. But Europeans were deterred away over several decades, and the country fully achieved independence in 1975. São Tomé and Príncipe has a reputation as a stable democracy.
